These videos of street performance at the service of Palestinian freedom are taken from the collection of Adalah-New York: The New York Campaign for the Boycott of Israel. Adalah-NY works with JVP and many local groups in campaigns for Consumer, Cultural, and Academic boycott of Israel, as well as divestment from All Things Land-Grab. Many other groups around the world have created joyous, passionate street performances for this cause; we hope to feature more of them in the Gallery.
About the gallery curator:
I’ve spent many grueling and enjoyable years on the road, putting my musical and comedic efforts at the service of the persecuted, downtrodden, dispossessed, and generally dissed. I’ve often been accompanied, or shadowed, by characters such as Singing CIA Agent George Shrub, Moderate Clearcutter George Stump, Bard of the Bankers Wild Bill Bailout, and of course Abe Foxhole of the Arab Defamation League. In the last decade it’s been a pleasure to re-fashion well-known songs to explain Israeli apartheid to folks, which I’m sure was the original intent of all the folk and rock stars I’ve updated with parody and thrust. Single BDS Ladies: Dance Squad revamps Gaga, 2010.
Adalah-NY demonstrates at Leviev Jewelers on Madison Avenue in New York on peak diamond-buying holidays. Why? Because Leviev builds illegal settlements. And traffics in conflict diamonds, among other unkosher activities. Here Adalah-NY’s dance squad updates Lady Gaga’s marriage directive.
Batsheva's Star Wars show implodes, 2012.
Batsheva chose Star War music to drown out its apartheid shilling, so dancers and brassy musicians reconfigured it to reflect the real wars being hidden behind the smooth moves.
Ahava-Brenner-Motorola: Off-Off-Broadway tour of BDS targets, 2010.
Adalah-NY takes an Off-Off-Broadway stroll to visit retailers of Ahava Stolen Beauty Cream, Max Brenner Apartheid Chocolate, and Motorola Dispossession Surveillance. Song and dance for each.
Ballet Made Clear, 2010.
Tutus and street bands clear up some questions about the Israel Ballet. The Rude Mechanical Orchestra assists dancers in deconstructing the Israel Ballet's gauzy cover-up of dispossession. Some call it art-washing. These folks hang them out to dry.
From Ferguson to Palestine, the lives of the oppressed matter, 2014.
Rappers, dabke dancers, singers come out for a street festival supporting equal rights and self-determination, in opposition to official Israel Defense Forces Culture Flak-in-Chief Idan Raichel, performing at Symphony Space, NYC. More info from Adalah-NY.
God Rest Leviev: Anti-apartheid Christmas Carol, 2012.
People sometimes buy diamonds around Christmas, so Adalah-NY always visits the criminal diamond emporium of Lev Leviev on Madison Avenue then, armed only with Corrected Christmas Carols to combat the snuff specialist Leviev.
Aroma Espresso Bar Bars the truth of its real occupation, 2010.
Aroma is an Israeli company that gives us concerns about its outlets in the occupied territories of Palestine. We tried to reason, theatrically, with the denizens of its Houston Street outlet in New York.
Global Village demands TIAA-Cref divest from occupation, 2012.
JVP and Adalah-NY joined forces in the campaign to push TIAA-Cref, an enormous pension fund, to divest from companies destroying Palestine. The Village People never were so anti-colonial!
